Mastering The Art Of Trailer Towing In South Africa

Sep 26, 2024 | Car, Tips & Tools

There’s nothing quite like being able to pack your belongings into a trailer, instead of playing an impossible game of Tetris with your boot. However, packing up is the easy bit. Trailer towing can be quite a daunting task – especially if you’re new to it.

Whether you’re hauling a boat, a caravan, or a load of equipment, proper trailer maintenance and safe driving practices are crucial to ensure a smooth and secure journey.

To help you out, this article will explore the key aspects of trailer towing in South Africa and provide you with the information you need to navigate this challenge with confidence.

The Basics: Trailer Maintenance

You might not think of it, because a trailer doesn’t have an engine, but in fact, trailers need to be regularly maintained. Neglecting your trailer’s upkeep can lead to unexpected breakdowns, costly repairs, and even dangerous situations on the road. At AA Inform, we recommend following a comprehensive maintenance schedule to keep your trailer in top condition.

The first place to start is with the tyres. You want to inspect the tyres for proper inflation and adequate tread depth, because under-inflated or worn tyres can cause blowouts, leading to loss of control and potential accidents. While you’re checking the tyres out, make sure that the wheel bearings are well-lubricated and in good condition to prevent overheating and seizure.

Next up are the trailer’s coupling mechanism, safety chains, and lighting systems. While you should have a mechanic look these things over, what we can say is that the coupling should be securely attached to your vehicle’s tow ball. Additionally, the safety chains should be crossed under the trailer’s tongue – this prevents it from hitting the ground in case of a detachment. When it comes to the lights, you’ll want to make sure these are functioning correctly to ensure visibility.

The Packing: Securing Your Load

It’s tempting to pack everything in, without paying attention to what is going where, but in reality, the distribution of your belongings is really important. What you want to do is make sure that the trailer’s weight is evenly distributed, with the majority of the load concentrated over the trailer’s axles. What this will do is help maintain proper tongue weight and improve handling.

Again, we understand that it’s tempting to chuck absolutely everything in, but you need to follow the manufacturer’s recommended weight capacity and avoid overloading your trailer as this can greatly compromise safety.

Trailer Towing Driving: Extra Caution And Skill

When you think about the added weight and length of hitching a trailer to your vehicle, it makes sense that towing a trailer requires extra caution and skill to adapt to how it impacts your vehicle’s handling, braking, and acceleration.

When it comes to driving with a trailer, you’ll need to make the following adjustments:

  • Always allow for longer stopping distances.
  • Plan your manoeuvres well in advance.
  • When overtaking, ensure you have ample space and visibility.
  • It’s better to avoid driving in windy conditions and speeding, to prevent swaying or ‘snaking.’
  • If your trailer does sway, gently apply the trailer brakes (if equipped, gently slow your vehicle if not) and gradually reduce speed to regain control.
