Signs Your Car Battery Is About To Die (And How To Prevent It)

Mar 18, 2025 | Tips & Tools, Uncategorised

A car battery is one of those parts we often take for granted – until it fails at the worst possible time. Knowing the warning signs of a dying car battery and how to prevent it from letting you down can save you from a frustrating and potentially dangerous roadside situation.

On average, car batteries last between three and five years. With regular maintenance you are more likely to get the most out of it and only need to replace it towards the five year point.

Here’s how to spot the red flags and a few tips to help you extend your battery’s life.

Slow Engine Crank

If your engine takes longer than usual to start, it could be a sign that your battery is struggling. It’s this “slow crank” that provides you with a head’s up that your battery’s charge is too low to turn the engine over efficiently.

Prevention Tip: Regularly test your battery’s charge and replace it every 3–5 years, depending on your driving habits and the South African climate.

Dim Lights And Electrical Issues

When your battery is weak, it struggles to power all of your car’s electrical systems. So, when you start noticing that your headlights are losing their brightness, your interior lights are flickering, or your power windows are moving up and down a bit sluggishly, this is your sign that it’s time to have your battery checked.

Prevention Tip: Switch off headlights, interior lights, and other electronics when the engine is off. Get your alternator checked if you notice dimming lights.

Dashboard Warning Light

Modern cars often have a battery warning light that appear when there’s an issue. This can indicate a failing battery or a problem with the charging system.

Prevention Tip: Don’t ignore warning lights. Have your battery and alternator tested by a professional as soon as possible.

A Swollen Or Leaking Battery Case

We love the fact that in South Africa we can enjoy hot summers and cooler winters. The problem is that the more extreme temperatures can cause your car battery case to swell, which reduces its lifespan. Leaks can also lead to corrosion around the terminals.

Prevention Tip: Park in shaded areas when possible and check the battery case for any swelling or leaks regularly.

Unpleasant Smell

If you notice a rotten egg smell around your car, it could be due to a leaking battery, which releases sulphuric acid and creates hydrogen gas.

Prevention Tip: Clean the battery terminals periodically and replace the battery immediately if you detect any leaks.

Frequent Jump Starts Needed

For some people, it’s the windows that go up and down a bit slowly, but for others, it’s when a jump-start is needed more often than not. This is your sign that the battery is nearing the end of its life.

Prevention Tip: Invest in a portable car battery charger and replace the battery if it struggles to hold a charge.
